Nuclei was appointed to create a library and home office/ retreat located in an existing and largely unused basement area.
Due to uncomfortably low ceilings, the space was to a large extent unusable. To resolve this, the floor level was dropped by excavating the basement floor as far as the foundations allowed, thereby improving the ceiling height and usability of the space. Retaining walls needed to be added where the structure cuts into the mountainside and where the bedrock was now exposed.
The brief was to create a library and two home offices with a classic, cigar-lounge feel in order to complement existing furniture and antique pieces from the client’s collection. Shop fitting formed one of the largest portions of the project with all joinery elements designed and custom manufactured to detail.
The project later developed into a mixed use space, with the main room serving as library, wine cellar and entertainment area.
