farm house, irene village – pretoria
Keeping in line with the prevalent architectural style of Old Irene Village in Pretoria, as well as our client’s personal preference, this new house was designed in a Farm or Ranch style architecture with references to Old Pretoria and the vernacular that is reminiscent of houses in older parts of Sunnyside and surrounding areas. Particular care was taken to ensure that the old-world design and character did not have a negative impact on the luxury of the home and careful consideration and planning given to ensure spatial decisions and choice of materials allowed for a modern and comfortable living space.
Materials selected on the exterior facades, are in line with the architecture of the surrounding properties, where the Irene Stone is a very prominent and characteristic element associated with both Old Irene, as well as Old Pretoria styles of architecture. Plaster work with moulded concrete columns, as well as small architectural details as seen in the tower entrance detail, ensure the house blends into its surroundings as though it has always been part of the area. The wrap around style roof and verandas further enhances the farm style architecture and allows for comfortable covered patio and entertainment areas, linked to the large open plan living spaces.
The private areas of the house is well scaled and comfortable with a high standard of finishes and further enhances the overall quality of the residence. The courtyard and covered walkway linking the outbuilding to the mail house, further enhances the farm style living and create intimate and protected spaces for a herb garden and service yard that included the dog-kennel with heated flooring.
