The project involved transforming a relatively small space to accommodate multiple functions alongside a large volume of research materials, presenting a significant design challenge that was successfully addressed through careful planning and clear separation of three distinct zones: reception and administration, reading and seating, and research and study areas.

To maximise storage, the surrounding walls were primarily dedicated to shelving for books, magazines, and other research materials. Existing windows overlooking an adjacent dining area-a later addition-were closed off. To compensate for the loss of natural light and maintain a sense of openness, a creative light-box featuring a vinyl graphic was installed behind the reception counter as a key design element. In the seating area, custom artwork inspired by astronomy was commissioned to create a unique sense of place aligned with one of the library’s research fields.

The result is a cosy, professional, and highly efficient environment that transformed the previously cluttered and uninspiring library into a welcoming space. Following the success of this project, Nuclei was invited to tender for the interior upgrade of the NRF Head Office building adjacent to the CSIR premises in Pretoria. This subsequent project encompassed a complete renovation of the main entrance foyer, reception area, corridors, stairwells, four main boardrooms, and an auxiliary entertainment space. The primary goals were to enhance corporate identity, improve visibility, and introduce greater colour and cohesion throughout the building.

Given the NRF’s status as a non-profit parastatal reliant on donations, budget constraints required extensive consultation with client representatives and department heads to develop a clear and focused brief. Concept proposals were submitted and approved before advancing to detailed design, construction documentation, and tendering. The tender was awarded to TREND Projects, with construction completed within a few months.
